when I sit down to write I just draw

when I go to my desk for the tape I just draw

when I try to take a message I just draw

when I decide to make a to-do list because

there’s a lot I haven’t done because of the drawing

I just draw when I open the mail or pay the bills

I’m angry with my hand because it isn’t drawing

when I fill in a survey I just draw

when I sit down to write I just draw

when I look for the ruler I just draw

when I sit down to read I just draw

when I balance my checkbook I just draw

when I write my daughter’s name

on her lunchbag I just draw

during a work retreat I just draw

when I take notes during a meeting

with some dollarheaded yahoo in a tie I just draw

when I sleep I just draw

when I sit down to write I just draw

at night

after I take all the bricks I lug around

out of my pockets and put them on the dresser

after I remove and name each of my hairs

after I unwrap my body

and shape all of the fresher looking

organs into a cheerful meat loaf

after I snap off my fingers and eat them like pretzels

after I place my head on the same shelf

in the refrigerator as the beer

I sit down to write but just draw

what I see

between fish and birds

between now and nouns

and the lines overlap and unknot space

and I go to my desk in that space and I draw and

I sit on the beach in that space and I draw

and I fall off of a cliff in that space and I draw

when I sit down to write
