dante’s curse

we know them all too well all of them
crowded into a corner with their clothes
worn and tattered. they will think they’ve
eluded us and are about to slip into the air

but no, another fate awaits them in their
infamy… a lingering immortality which
in itself is their historical sentence alone
to remember forever the shadows of deeds

that in this hell of torment and permanence
they can never forget, they will always be
aware that for all eternity they must know
& not forget for a second their what and why
